Here, in just over an hour, he sketches out one possible path through a label whose catalog-encompassing noise, techno, free jazz, and more-would be difficult to sum up in a set 10 times as long. Tijana T – Rinse RM 17th November 2018īill Kouligas' PAN label, the Berlin-based experimental powerhouse responsible for albums from Objekt, Amnesia Scanner, Eartheater, and many artists even further afield, turns 10 this year. The whole set is a useful, timely reminder that borders are an outdated concept. The hourlong set is heavy with unreleased material, and the back half is particularly invigorating as the tempo slides inexorably upward, cruising into the sped-up soca of Granada's Aquarion Studios and the lurching syncopations of Slikback's remix for Italy's dancehall-indebted Still. His Noisey mix for MUTEK.MX doubles as a showcase of many of those sounds, including Tanzanian singeli from Bamba Pana and thunderous bass music from Kenya's Slikback, both of whom played alongside Errorsmith at this summer's Nyege Nyege Festival in Uganda. The Berlin producer Errorsmith (aka Erik Wiegand, a member of the groups MMM and Smith N Hack, and the creator of Native Instruments' Razor soft synth) has carved out a unique aesthetic: You can still detect traces of Germany's rave history in his stabbing synths and bunker-busting drums, but these days, his rhythmic interests are more closely keyed to the leftfield club music coming out of Africa and Latin America.
